Tremendous success for EURIZON Detector School

The EURIZON school on particle detectors successfully took place from July 17th to July 28th 2023. Training young scientists in state-of-the-art particle detection technologies was the main purpose of the school. The school was hosted by the University of Wuppertal (Bergische Universität Wuppertal).

65 students participated in the school, 52 of which are PhD students already professionally involved in particle detection technologies. Student origins span over 27 nationalities, from institutes in 18 countries.

The programme included 40 morning lectures, involving 23 expert lecturers from various institutes in Europe. For the afternoon programme, students could choose individually every day among 12 hands-on exercises on particle detector technologies or related software tools. To this aim, the various EURIZON organising institutes and Wuppertal University provided specialised hands-on equipment, documentation and expert tutors. As could be seen from the daily rush on signing up, these hands-on opportunities were particularly appreciated by the students. Lively afternoon tutorials on making engaging scientific presentations were also organised. One afternoon was devoted to plenary flash presentations by the students themselves.

The local organisers invested a tremendous effort in equipping many rooms for the numerous hands-on exercises, and in setting up catering and a rich social programme, which included three social dinners and a visit to the UNESCO site of the "Zeche Zollverein" historic coal mine.

Overall the school was a tremendous success. As one of the students expressed it: " I have learned a lot and at the same time I have met wonderful scientists ".
